Despite our best intentions, we all judge books by their covers. Considered the Number-One marketing tool for booksellers, cover design is meant to convey the genre, themes, and content of a book in a primarily visual form.
The My JOB Team and I are delighted to reveal our new cover! Our team strove to weave together the pieces that make a concept into bound book. Each component is painstakingly planned and executed, and this cover was no exception.
Our cover artist, the talented Michael Short, chose to feature a red rickshaw as the primary image on our cover. Not only is it an eye-catching image: It also refers back to the very first narrator I interviewed, Muhammad, who has become an emblematic ambassador of the dignity of jobs–one of our central themes.
The logo, designed by Isaac Hinman (who also happens to be my talented son), is featured prominently. The design suggests a globe to symbolize the voices from all around the world that make up our narrative. The building silhouettes show the diversity of walks of life and the places where our narrators live–from office buildings in California, to horse farms in Kentucky, to a factory in Vietnam.
We’re getting closer to the reveal of the whole book: a day I have been dreaming about since I collected that first story. Thanks to all who have been involved in this journey, and to those who will continue to foster it.
